The Magnetic Knife Holder project has to be one of my favourites. A simple, yet complex project that I worked on with my friend Taneesh.
He is a sensational woodworker and has a great design eye. We started off by discussing exactly what we wanted. We both loved the minimalistic look so that would be our first design priority - It almost had to look like it was floating on the wall.
Although, we knew it had to be functional. As university students, we would be moving house annually, so the knife block had to move with us. We needed a way that it would stick firmly to the wall, but not too firmly that we can't remove it.
Stay tuned for the rest of the story...
This was way more expensive than we anticipated. Our ideal knife holder had to be made using Black American Walnut and had to be the exact dimensions we designed for. It was a great design, and we didn't come all this way, just to come all this way. We wanted to finish it off, and challenge ourselves to see if our imagination could turn to reality.
We told ourselves it would be a great investment and although we may have been lying to ourselves back then, in hindsight, it was so worth it!
